Holy Butter Cow

It's August 21...where the heck have I been.
Let's see...since June we had a flood in Des Moines, not really as bad as the floods of 1993, but still pretty bad. I'm still looking for a job, I've been freelancing for most of the summer so it's been nice getting some extra cash. I've even been saving money too...wow.
July... my cousin Larry got married, it was a great wedding. I haven't been to a wedding in a long time.
Now it's August and summer is almost over. I went to the Iowa State Fair four times - yes, four times. The first time I went was with a friend, Matt, and we participated in the Corn Dog Chomp which was trying to get 8000 people eating a corndogs at the same time for the Guinness Book of World Records. I don't know if it was a legit contest but I can say that I was there. I also went another day and participated in the "horseshoe pitching" contest. I didn't do so well but I got a yellow ribbon for participating - woo hoo!
The summer olympics are going on and the local girl, Shawn Johnson, won 3 silver medals and 1 gold. She doesn't live very far from me...my kind of claim to fame. Go Team USA.
Until next time...

It's June already

It's June already, I can't believe it. Time seems to go faster and faster as you get older.
We had more rain last night, a big storm came through about 12:30 last night, lots of lightning, thunder, and rain. While lying in bed I watched the tree in the front yard blowing in the wind and listened to the rain hit the window until I fell back asleep. Seems I can never stay awake during a whole storm.

This weekend is my cousins wedding. I haven't been to a wedding in years, in fact, I don't even remember whose wedding I last went to. There will be lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins there that I haven't seen in a long time also. It will be like a wedding/family reunion sort of. I hope it doesn't rain on the wedding - this spring has been crazy.

So anyhow...

It's been a few weeks so I thought I'd better get a new post up.
Spring is finally here and we've been having some great weather lately, woo hoo! I love the nice warm weather, makes me feel so much better.
This weekend is Memorial Day and next week is The Principal Charity Golf Classic. I'm going to be volunteering at the tournament that week as a golf marshall, I'm not sure all what I have to do but I guess I'll learn. The tournament is on the senior golf PGA tour so I think I might see someone famous...like I know who some of these players are.

Till next time

Pella Tulip Time

For my first road trip this summer I went to Pella Tulip Time but didn't go until Sunday since Saturday was a little chilly. The day was great and the tulips were in full bloom. The festival was over but there were still many people out on the town square admiring the flowers and the downtown area. The town is about 45 minutes southeast of Des Moines and just east of Red Rock Lake. Pella is a small town, maybe 10,000 or 15,000 people, very Dutch. I posted some pics that I took on my Flickr account. Check them out.

Salisbury Steak

I went to the store the other day to pick up some easy to make Lean Cuisine dinners, I usually only get a couple different ones so I get 5 or 6 of each and I'm on my way. I went to go fix one up tonight and to my surprise I had grabbed a Salisbury Steak one by accident. It was mixed in with my two favorites and I accidentally purchased it. Well, to not let it go to waste, I had it for dinner tonight. It wasn't bad, it tasted like a spiced up hamburger with some mushrooms and sauce on top, also came with mashed potatoes and carrots so I think it was good for me.
Next time, I will look at every box before I put it in my grocery cart. I hate when that happens.

Earth Day

Ah, spring. Winter is finally over and spring has arrived. Yesterday was in the 70's and today it's going to be in the 70's also. It seemed like it snowed every other day this past winter and the days went by slow. I'm glad it's over. Summer is my favorite time of year.

Yesterday was Earth Day and I was thinking about recycling and stuff like that. I hope I'm doing the right thing. I found a good site of 20 ways you can do to be green. Hope you like it.

TIVO is cool

If you don't have TIVO, you should get it. I like to watch my favorite shows not at their scheduled times but when I'm ready to watch them and I get to fast forward through all those commercials. I also have this cool program on my computer that works great with TIVO, it's called TOAST and it takes shows that I have on my TIVO and downloads them to my computer so I can watch them on my computer or convert the shows to my ipod and watch them on the go. Isn't modern technology wonderful?

so, I was listening to the radio this morning...

I was listening to the radio this morning - I think it was WHO - and they were talking about old local TV shows but there were a lot of them I've never heard of but there were a few that brought back some memories. One that was mentioned was the Floppy Show. I used to watch that show all the time, it was on after the noon news - which at that time was only 15 minutes long - and after school, I think at 3:30 p.m. What a fun show, lots of stupid jokes and silly cartoons.
Another show they talked about was Betty Lou and the House with the Magic Window. I don't remember a whole bunch about that show except there was a couple puppets and this lady who liked to do arts and crafts. Fun times.
I think after the invention of cable TV these shows were cancelled and all the kids started watching Nickelodeon. Those were the days :-)

starting my own business and launching my own website

After nine years of working at the Des Moines Register I have decided to start freelancing graphic design and launching my own website. It's something new and I'm a little nervous about it but I'm sure I'll do great.
